PV Hail Impact Tester is a specialized industrial instrument designed to evaluate how well solar PV modules can withstand hail strikes. By using artificially produced ice balls to simulate natural hail, the equipment allows for the assessment and verification of a PV module's resistance to hail impact. It is primarily used by PV module manufacturers and testing organizations for quality verification purposes.

Structural Composition
The hail impact test equipment for photovoltaic (PV) modules integrates four distinct subsystems into a cohesive, functional unit designed to execute the complete hail impact testing process. A pneumatic launching system fires standard ice balls—simulating natural hail—with a diameter of 25 mm at velocities of up to 23 m/s. A mechanical positioning system ensures an accuracy of ±1 mm, covering a test area of 2600 × 1300 mm. The equipment also features an integrated refrigeration and thermal insulation unit, enabling the production of ice balls in a -20°C environment. The specimen platform supports horizontal testing for PV modules up to 2500 × 1300 mm in size.
The pneumatic launching system serves as the control unit for the hail-impact launch mechanism. Powered by compressed air at a pressure of approximately 0.6–0.8 MPa, the system utilizes an air reservoir for storage and pressure regulation; by adjusting the air pressure, the launch velocity of the ice balls within the barrel can be precisely controlled. This pneumatic system requires supporting hardware, including a high-pressure air source, pressure-regulating equipment, pneumatic tubing, and solenoid valves.
The mechanical positioning system controls the movement of the launcher to target different areas of the photovoltaic (PV) module during impact testing. A computer-controlled mechanical drive adjusts the position of the launch barrel, while an infrared targeting system ensures accurate alignment. The mechanism employs stepper motors to achieve rapid and precise positioning—meeting a positioning accuracy of <1 mm and a cumulative experimental error of <5 mm. This performance significantly exceeds the IEC standard requirement (which allows for a deviation of no more than 10 mm from the target position), thereby ensuring the reliability of the test results.
The sample fixture is designed to secure the PV module under test. Both the mechanical positioning system and the sample fixture are engineered based on the dimensions of the test specimens; the standard configuration measures 2400 mm × 1300 mm (length × height), covering the effective surface area of a standard 2000 mm × 1000 mm PV module. The sample fixture is constructed from SUS304 stainless steel plates and bars, while the mechanical positioning system utilizes specialized aluminum alloy profiles.
The velocity measurement system monitors the launch speed of the ice balls. Positioned in front of the launch barrel, it employs two photoelectric sensors spaced 50 cm apart. The velocity is calculated using the formula $v=s/t$ and displayed in real-time, with the value updating for each subsequent test. The system consists of detection sensors, a high-speed response module, and a software module. It integrates stable, high-performance photoelectric sensors with a programmable logic controller (PLC), featuring a Human-Machine Interface (HMI) for operation and an external printer for generating experimental data reports.
